Everyone who starts martial arts training quickly realize that it’s an enjoyable way to keep fit both physically and mentally. You’re simultaneously building up your concentration, strength, and skill. Taking martial arts classes near you gives you a good dose of adrenaline, lets you meet like-minded people, and allows you to indulge in friendly competition.

All lessons learned in martial arts could be helpful for self-defense and day-to-day endeavors. In fact, continuous martial arts training can change your life in more ways than you can imagine! Plus it looks really cool.

If you’re just starting out as a beginner, you may be feeling a little confused as to which martial arts choose. Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding Martial Arts.

Who can train for Martial Arts Near Me?

Anyone can take martial arts classes – it’s just a matter of choosing the right style. Don’t put off joining a class just because you think you need to ‘prepare’ for training. This will only delay your progress! Unless you’re recovering from an injury or illness, in which case, you must always let your martial arts instructor know so they can give you the best advice.  In some cases we’ve known instructors advise alternative exercises to help with your injury like yoga classes.

The main thing to remember is that your martial arts instructor is there for you. The experience they have will quickly get you understanding the basics with a keenness to progress. When you look around at the class you’ll see all shapes and sizes from all different kinds of backgrounds. The nice thing about martial arts is there is a good ‘community’ feeling. People being proud of what they’re learning and the people they’re learning it with!

All you need to do for your first class is show up ready to learn!

Martial arts classes for Children

Children as young as 4-6 years old can benefit from age-appropriate children’s martial arts classes. It’s a healthy activity that can improve a growing child’s cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, hand-eye coordination and discipline. Martial arts classes for children also provide an avenue for the child to channel their energy into something productive.

A common concern among parents is that exposure to such an environment can promote violence. It’s the opposite! Martial arts classes will provide both children and adults proper guidance on avoiding conflict. Training in martial arts promotes the values of self-discipline, impulse control, respect for self and others, focus, and self-confidence.

The martial arts styles that are suited for children include judo, karate and taekwondo. When choosing a class, note that the discipline and philosophy of the martial arts style must suit the child’s interests and personality.

Martial arts classes for Adults

“I’m actually looking for martial arts classes near me for adults…”

No problem! Plenty of the classes available are aimed towards adults of all levels. Many practitioners start taking beginner martial arts classes as fully-grown adults. Fortunately, they’re still able to grow and benefit from their practice. You, too, could learn practical self-defense skills while getting a good workout!

Some of the martial arts styles that are suited for adults with no martial arts background include karate, boxing, and krav maga.

Martial arts classes for Seniors

Those at an advanced age are always encouraged to avoid a sedentary lifestyle by taking up a physical activity. Martial arts can help rebuild muscle tone, stamina, flexibility, and coordination. Training can also be as low impact as it needs to be for practitioners with physical limitations. In fact, it’s not uncommon for seniors in their 60s, 70s, and 80s to start taking up martial training. Additionally, martial arts classes for seniors are useful for maintaining mental alertness.

The martial arts styles that are suited for older students include judo, jiu jitsu, aikido, and tai chi. When choosing a martial arts style, keep in mind any health considerations or physical limitations. It is important to consult with a doctor before starting any program. Also make sure to inform the instructor of any pre-existing medical conditions at the beginning of the class so they can guide you accordingly.

Which are the Best Martial Arts Classes to take?

There is no universal ‘best’ martial arts to learn. But there’s definitely at least one martial arts style that will suit you. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when choosing the best martial arts style for you:

“What’s motivating me to do martial arts?”

What is your motivation to take martial arts classes? What is the main purpose it’s supposed to serve? Perhaps you’re inspired by someone or something other than a goal. If you’re a fan of the Karate Kid, you may be itching to try Karate Lessons and earn your way to the top. If you grew up watching Jackie Chan movies, you might be more interested in the disciplines of Wu-Shu and Wing Chun in case you need to fight off bad guys. The more interested you are in the discipline, the more likely you’ll continue to pursue it and gain the full benefits!

“What type of classes are available at martial arts clubs near me?”

Location is one of the most crucial factors when choosing which martial arts classes to take. Mastering any skill takes dedication and discipline, especially one that involves intense physical activity. There will certainly be days when you’ll be tempted to skip a class or two. This is human nature and certainly shouldn’t deter you from taking classes in the first place.

Training at a location near you will make the classes a lot more convient to join and you’ll be less likely to find an excuse not to attend. You can easily find martial arts clubs and schools near you by searching online. Try the search bar above!

Note: If you’re thinking ‘I want martial arts near me for adults / children / seniors, how do I find them?’, the age range will always be indicated for each class. Click on the listing to see more details!)

“Where will I fit in?”

There’s a distinctive vibe to every martial arts style and venue. Visit a few clubs and schools to see what happens in training and what the people are like. Don’t be afraid to talk to the people and ask them about their chosen art. If you get on with them and feel comfortable being there, then that’s a good sign you’re in the right place!

What are the most popular Martial Arts styles?

To give you a better idea of your options, here are some of the most popular and most common martial arts classes near you:

Muay Thai

Best for high intensity training

One of the key foundations for the MMA sport, muay thai is widely considered to be one of the most popular striking arts in the world. The techniques are simple but highly effective; fighters use the hands, shins, knees, and elbows to deliver blows that could be useful even in a street fight.

Most people take Muay Thai classes for self-defense and to improve overall fitness. It provides the ultimate full-body workout, involving plenty of cardio and strength training in addition to sparring. This is to improve the person’s endurance, power, agility, and mental strength. If you’re not quite in good shape yet, don’t worry; it’s still possible for you to join Muay Thai classes.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Best for building skills over power

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting. It prides itself as a ‘gentle art’ as it is less violent compared to the other styles of martial arts. The techniques taught in BJJ classes builds one’s skill of forcing a resisting opponent into submission. Grappling skills are prioritised over brute strength; in other words, someone with weaker physical attributes may subdue a stronger person if they use the right techniques. This is what draws so many people to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu not just for sport but also for self-defense!

Best for training for mental focus and physical coordination

As you may know, karate is one of the most well-known and widely practiced martial art in the world. This discipline is generally safe and easy to learn, but difficult to master! It uses open-handed striking and blocking techniques that may be useful for self-defense.

The major styles include Goju-Ryu Karate, Isshin-Ryu Karate, and Shotokan Karate. Lessons for beginners are initially not very physically demanding, and therefore are generally suitable for children and seniors.

Best for punching techniques and reflex speed

Is there anyone who’s never heard of boxing? Answer: probably not. Boxing is a simple but incredibly popular sport centered around fist fighting. It is currently also a trendy way to lose weight, as boxing training involves lots of cardio to increase endurance and agility. While kicks are not allowed, proper footwork plays a huge role in timing, harnessing power, and moving out of the way. Training in boxing will teach you how to pack a punch from different angles, can help you lose weight, and can improve your reflex speed.

Best for kicking drills and improved flexibility

The nature of Taekwondo is to provide one with the ability to use their fists and feet to control or break up a fight. Though Taekwondo classes typically include punching drills, this Korean martial art and now Olympic sport is most recognized for its powerful and efficient kicking techniques. Taekwondo training also places emphasis on improving flexibility, particularly in the legs and hips, to provide full range of motion when doing kicks.

Best for martial arts as a sport

Judo is a grappling art easily recognized for its throws and break falls. Derived from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it was designed to be used for sport rather than actual combat. Judo classes are available for a wide range of ages and fitness levels as it is defensive in nature and is considered a ‘soft’ martial art.

Krav Maga

Best for self defense

Krav Maga is a self-defense system that uses guerrilla warfare techniques and tactical strategies for survival. This style places emphasis on using ‘natural movements and reactions’ to neutralize a threat. Krav Maga is considered to be one of the deadliest martial arts and is the combative system used by the Israeli Defense Forces. Krav Maga classes available today are a modified version that Krav Maga creator Imi Lichtenfeld developed for civilian’s for self-defense.

Learning Self Defense from Viral Videos

Videos displaying tips and tricks for self-defense have recently been circulating around Facebook and other social media platforms. While entertaining, watching and memorizing these ‘techniques’ aren’t likely to be very useful in life-threatening situations. You don't want to end up like this:

For one, watching is very different from doing. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to recall these tips off the top of your head after just watching self-defense videos! Without the proper discipline and physical conditioning that occurs in real martial arts classes near you, learning from martial arts videos may also provide a false sense of confidence. This could ultimately lead a person to trouble without the proper knowledge and skill to get out.

That being said, it really is possible to learn martial arts online. You need a legitimate online martial arts instructor who can teach full courses. They’ll be able to monitor progress and help you work on points for improvement through videos and video calls. These online martial arts courses will require you to practice regularly, meaning your mind and body will have time to learn the moves.

Red Sun Academy’s style is JO KWON CHI (JKC), which is a blend of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Turkish styles. What makes Red Sun unique is three things: One, we use technique and leverage instead of relying only on strength. Students learn to apply proper body mechanics and utilize their core instead of “muscling it”. Two, our price is about half of what some of the commercial schools charge, and we don’t require contracts. Three, the instructors go well out of their way to share their knowledge, often giving their own personal time freely to individual students. Red Sun Academy offers many extras other than martial art training, where students and instructors attend fun outside events such as dinners, picnics, movies, hikes, parties, day trips to the lake, and weekend retreats. Jo Kwon Chi is a most unique martial art. In our style, instead of blocking force against force, we divert an opposing force. We teach ways to ensure that your face/body isn’t in a striker’s path! Students learn to ground, neutralize, and use leverage and technique. We offer group and private lessons. During the pandemic of 2020 and 2021, we have been meeting outdoors in the field and also online on zoom. Any new student can join us online, from anywhere in the world. Due to the nature of what we teach, students must be 10 years old or older to join our academy. We warmly welcome new students!
